This performance originated from an idea suggested in 1991 by Rev. John Suddards,
then curate of Halstead, that a production of the Halstead Riots of the late 18th
and early 19th Centuries was desperately needed. Stuart Moffat, Penny Hill and Doreen
Middleton then set to work researching and writing but the project was shelved. In
2009 Jane Winch, from Halstead’s Historical Society, invited Stuart to give a talk
on folk music, light-heartedly adding “Oh, and if you could somehow relate it to
Halstead, more’s the better”. With a little help from Bobby Moffat, Graham Winch,
John Miners and Jane the songs finally saw the light of day. An Essex tale told by
Essex people.
